Poor of Peru
March, 2009
Greetings and blessings from Ottawa with my wishes for a very Happy Easter!
As our Holy Father, Benedict VI wrote in his wonderful Lenten Message for this year, there are three practices that help us prepare better for the celebration of Easter: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
If one corresponds to what is being asked by the Church, then one enters into a greater celebration at Easter. Maybe almsgiving is not so common in our days – maybe there are no opportunities for almsgiving … I would like to give you an opportunity to help the poor in Peru and bring joy to their Easter celebration as well.
In this picture you see a child from a shantytown in Lima looking in a dump for something that can help him and his family survive. When we see what hardships some of our poor brothers and sisters go through, then we can consider ourselves very fortunate in Canada. Every little bit helps, as Scripture says:
“whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones…amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Matt. 10:42,
and also
“Come, you who are blessed by my Father … for I was hungry and you gave me food.” Matt. 25:34
May the joy that comes from helping others be magnified in you as you experience the joy of the risen Christ in the Easter Vigil celebration.
I will be praying for you also at the Feast of the Divine Mercy so dear to my mother and myself; may the promises of the Lord be realized in you.
Make cheques out to M.A.M.I., Peru projects. You will receive an income tax receipt (address: MAMI, 601 Taylor Street West, Saskatoon SK S7M 0C9, Tel.: 306-653-6453 – this is the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate).
May God bless you and keep you and make His face shine on you.
In the peace and love of Jesus and Mary,
Joe Kane, O.M.I.
