If there was ever a time in history when we needed the intervention of angels, and particularly the Archangels – the most famous of which is St. Michael the Archangel, it is now!
I am not the only one to recognize that even our secular headlines scream this. The world is topsy turvy, and violence and evil is seen at every turn. So what can we do? Well for starters, we each need to be a force for good in the immediate circles around us. This is not easy, as we are all prey to concupiscence, or the tendency to sin.
Secondly, we need repentance – through prayer and the Sacrament of Reconciliation if Catholic. Thirdly, we need to turn powerfully to prayer and a deep intimate relationship with God. We will each marvel at our deaths at the powerful weapon we had available at our disposal that is known as prayer – a weapon so powerful, but so underutilized, as it operates in the spiritual realm, and so to our darkened eyes, doesn’t always appear to accomplish anything. But accomplish it does – and often, for a strong, faith filled believer, quite powerfully. To illustrate I offer this latest ‘word’ from a source I personally believe to be authentic, and we would do well to hearken our ears to listen:
Mark 1:40-42 A leper came to (Jesus) begging him, and kneeling he said to him, ‘If you choose, you can make me clean.’ Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
“Dear children, let this Scripture passage be your focus this Lent. Do you know how ardently I long to cleanse and heal you? Then come to me on your knees and ask with faith and trust. I will not refuse. But more than that, I long to heal the leprosy of sin that has filled the world with death and decay. The stench permeates everything and only the fervent incense that rises from those few faithful keeps me from annihilating my beloved creation. So offer this leper’s prayer most fervently in the Divine Will on behalf of all—even the worst sinners. The bandages are being removed; the festering wounds are being exposed. Children, pour the balm of the Divine Will over the world. Let our desires merge and fuse. Let my longing be your longing, and let your prayers perfectly reflect the Divine Will. Conversion is what I desire, not condemnation. You, my children, are being called anew to participate in the salvation of souls. I have written here many times – particularly in the series “The State of Chaos” of dreams and visions of a coming time of chaos and totalitarian type rule. I don’t wish to repeat these here today, but stress that if these and others’ visions of these coming times do indeed come to pass (and indeed we already see chaos in many areas) it is of great importance that the remnant of faithful believers are united and prepared to stand firm in our faith – for ourselves, our families, and those around us whom God wishes to save from darkened consciences.
How daunting these times seem – even with eyes of faith. The good news is that our God is ever waiting to help us along the way, and has provided his holy messengers – angels – to lead us along the path. We always have them at our side; we just need to call on them.
The most known of the Archangels is that of Michael – the Prince of the Heavenly Host. It was to him that Pope Leo XIII composed a prayer of warfare after a vision in 1884:
Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said after all Low Masses everywhere.
When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices – two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation:
The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: “I can destroy your Church.”
The gentle voice of Our Lord: “You can? Then go ahead and do so.”
Satan: “To do so, I need more time and more power.”
Our Lord: “How much time? How much power?
Satan: “75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service.”
Our Lord: “You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will.”
In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Michael be said at the end of “low” Mass (not “high”, or sung Masses) throughout the universal Church, along with the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen); and the practice of the congregation praying these prayers at the end of Mass continued until about 1970, with the introduction of the new rite of the Mass.
John Paul II and St. Michael
However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Peter’s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael once again:“The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks [of]: “Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.”(Ephesians 6:10). And to this same battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (cf. Revelations 12:7). Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leo XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael: ‘St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil… ’
“Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite all to not forget it, but to recite it in order to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of this world.”http://www.michaeljournal.org; June 30, 2007
I had myself an intervention of these powerful angels after a particularly lengthy period of personal trial where I felt totally ‘backed to a wall’ without an idea of how to proceed. After this intervention, things took a dramatic turn within a month, and permanently changed the nature of the battle I was facing. I can testify to the courage, strength, clarity and outcome of difficult choices I had to make at the time. My experience was this:
Christmastime, 2009 – exact date unrecorded
I remembered the end of a dream and it was about a long difficult trial, where I had no idea where to turn…and then the following scene occurred…I began praying forcefully to St. Michael, the Archangel. I found myself up against a wall and I was praying over and over again to St. Michael – “Defend me in this hour of battle…”
As I was praying thus, four large angels – all made of the same white stone (St. Michael was in the middle of them and slightly higher in the air than they were and was leading them) – began to descend toward me from the air. I don’t know who the other three angels were, but they were all in the same appearance of white stone. As they descended toward me as I was praying the most amazing thing happened!
As I stood – almost pressed to the brick wall behind me, arms up trying to defend myself, watching the angels approach – all of a sudden St. Michael began hurtling balls of brilliant white light like lightening square at my situation – they began to hit it square in the face – head on if you will. I was being defended by these angels and I was slightly off to the left, completely safe & innocent, while the angels came in, and St. Michael just bombarded my situation with that white light (grace?) in my defense.
Everyone in the situation, including myself, was utterly shocked to see I had such powerful angels defending me – my spiritual walk had been so profoundly deep, but hidden, and the power I had around and with me was equally deep and profound. St. Michael and his angels personally took on the job of defending me in this battle, but I did not know the specific details of ‘what’ they were bombarding my situation with – but only saw with this spiritual inside glimpse that it was a literal deluge of brilliant balls of white light – specifically intended to defend me in the hour of battle I found myself in.”
These powerful angels, and indeed all God’s angels – particularly our Guardian angel – stand ever at the ready to help us in the increasing heat of our personal and human battle against the forces of darkness. We must increasingly learn to ask for their intercession.
Please accept this little story of witness as a testimony to the powerful intervention available from our angels – they have been given to us by God specifically for this purpose, and if your journey is anything like mine these days, I have a feeling you appreciate their intervention as well. The Bible records many instructions regarding angels, such as:
Psalm 91:11
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.” New International Version (NIV)
and
Psalm 34:6-7
This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” New International Version (NIV)
The prayer to St. Michael is a well known one, but I repeat it here and strongly suggest you embed it to memory so that it can be recited at any time.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.”
Lastly, I leave you with a prayer to St. Raphael the Archangel – one whose name means “God heals”, and a website dedicated to St. Raphael Holy Healing Ministry :
Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels, because you are the “Medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (name it) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ” http://www.straphaeloil.com
